Glossary: hyponymy
Explanation
Hyponymous words relate to each other in hierarchies of meaning. More general words are categories that encompass more specific words. The general words are called hypernyms and the specific words are hyponyms. For example, the hypernym colour contains the hyponym red (and green, blue, yellow etc.). In turn, red itself is a hypernym that covers hyponyms like scarlet or crimson.
